  Managed a staff of 25 engineers, geologist, and ES&H/QA specialists engaged in environmental restoration projects for Department of Defense involving cleanup of superfund sites contaminated with high explosives, heavy metals, and organics. Established and grew environmental business sector in Department of Defense, assuming full decision-making authority serving as lead technical expert.

Selected Accomplishments:

  • Cost Containment - Implemented an innovative sampling protocol that saved 75% on project costs and brought project in 38% under budget and 6 months ahead of schedule.
  • Subject Matter Expertise - Functioned as single point of contact for ESH and QA advice on decommissioning of university reactor, requiring extensive knowledge of both environmental and nuclear safety regulations.


  • Battelle Memorial Institute @ Pantex: Amarillo, TX

      Recruited to establish and direct comprehensive environmental management (EM) program, building division from ground up that supported dismantling and maintenance of nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. Staffed and trained 125 engineers, scientists, ESH/QA specialists, and administrative personnel. Developed mission statement and set performance goals, implemented site-wide project management system and financial controls, and managed $23 million annual budget. Served as Plant spokesperson for all environmental issues.

    Selected Accomplishments:

  • Cost & Time Optimization - Reduced total project cost estimate for ER program from $160 millin to $115 million and decreased scheduled cleanup period from 12 years to 8 years through deployment of innovative technology and regulatory strategies approved by State of Texas and EPA Region VI.
  • Formal Recognition - Earned White House Hammer Award and 3 Department of Energy awards for waste minimization and pollution prevention efforts. Led division to receive first-ever General Manager's Safety Award and subsequently achieve 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place rankings for 4 consecutive years.
  • Program Implementation - Established waste minimization and pollution prevention programs that reduced total waste 80% during period of increased production. Initiated waste technology exchange program with small businesses within a tri-state area through annual technology exchange conferences.
  • Regulatory Compliance - Eliminated backlog of regulatory violations and maintained record of zero violations or concerns in last 3 years as Division Manager. Developed environmental compliance strategy for weapons components subsequently used by DOE HQ for inclusion in national EPA ruling.


  • West Valley Nuclear Services: Buffalo, NY

      Brought on board to architect and build organization of 30 professionals for maintaining regulatory compliance involving solidification of high-level radioactive waste R&D program. Held full accountability for both environmental regulations and Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements.


    Selected Accomplishments:

  • Organizational Advocacy - Served as company spokesperson for Justice Department criminal investigation into company's environmental programs ultimately dismissed. Functioned as plant spokesperson for all environmental issues
  • Environmental Training & Compliance - Developed environmental training program for line supervisors subsequently adopted at all nationwide facilities. Maintained record of zero environmental compliance violations for plant throughout tenure as Department Manager.
